“Be Remarkable”: A Glimpse into Anthropologie’s Design Team
What is your official title?
Design Assistant [in] Knits for Anthropologie.
Tell us about how you were able to land a job with Anthropologie upon graduation?
Heartening family and friends + Four years of brutal dedication and focus + Passion + Brilliant instructors and mentors = Landing an incredible first job. It wasn’t quite that simple, but I’m firm a believer in everything happens for a reason. Between having the drive and genuinely believing in what I do— things kind of just fell into place.
What does your typical work day consist of?
8:30 call time. E-mails, tea, play around. Organize a meeting or two, look for inspiration. More e-mails, lunch when convenient, sketch, drape, CAD. Home anytime between six and eight. Curl up on the couch with friends and a movie. Repeat.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Traveling, imperfections, books, eavesdropping, other creative types. I can never really sit still so I’m constantly exploring and looking for the next thing that catches my attention.
How large is the Anthropologie design team (collaborations, number of members, etc.) and what is your specific role on the team?
The design teams at Anthro are pretty tight. I work alongside two other designers in the knits department, and that’s pretty much how it is across the other categories. What I love about work is that every day is different. I’m never just sitting in front of a computer all day (which would probably kill my soul a little bit). There’s always new tasks and challenges that come up, whether it be reworking drapes and artworks or tracking down the perfect button. Yet, the creativity side is most definitely balanced out with a business side. There is a lot of corresponding with vendors, making sure files are up to date, overall organization of our department– What it really comes down to is making sure everything is on track and where it needs to be before it’s needed.
What are some of your favorite designers?
Dries Van Noten, Phillip Lim, Marni, Phoebe Philo [of Céline] and Stella McCartney.
What advice do you have for aspiring fashion industry hopefuls?
Be remarkable. Every day. And whatever you decide to do— do it with passion. Without passion, everything is lost.
