The 5 Key Principles of Hester van Eeghen’s Designs!

Dec 20, 2010 By Amy

Passion, shape, and surprise aren’t usually words used to described handbags and other leather goods. However, those are just a few of the design principals which set Amsterdam-based leather goods company, Hester van Eeghen (HVE) apart from other luxury brands. For designer Hester van Eeghen, “beauty means the unusual; it’s that little surprise that tickles the spirit, or sometimes socks!” Given women (and men) are so close to they bags they carry around, she explains, “[they] can hide everything and reveal some things, it is an extension of a person.”

Well, anyone who carries around a van Eeghen bag must be full of confidence and probably isn’t afraid to hide too much about who they are. Her bold and artsy designs are heavily influenced by five key principals: beauty, passion, shape, color, and surprise.

Beauty: “For me, beauty means the unexpected,” says Hester. “I like beauty that surprises and tickles the spirit and sometimes even shocks.”

Passion: Passion is the engine of creation buoyancy that surrounds passionate people. Their spirit lifts those around them. That’s Passion, the engine of creation.

Shape: “I like creating a bit of confusion,” says Hester, “playing with the unexpected.”

Color: Color is the first design element to evoke a response. “Color is my energy source,” says Hester.

Surprise: “I like to create reactions, from little smiles on people’s faces to big question marks,” proclaims Hester. Her bags encompass fun details like hidden compartments and unique clasps.

The brand, which already has a presence in Europe and Asia, recently launched their first US retail endeavor- an online store featuring all of their leather goods for men and women. You can visit the HVEUS.com shop to browse van Eeghen’s creative works. All of her unique items are designed at her studio in Amsterdam and handcrafted in Italy.
