Karla Deras of Karla’s Closet Catches Up With MyFDB

Apr 19, 2011 By Vaneza

A while back we featured “Karla’s Closet” written by the lovely Karla Deras as one of our Weekend Reads. Her blog, which began in 2008, has since then become very popular and after running into her at the IFB conference during NYFW, Deras was kind enough to chat with us!

Any exciting projects or collaborations you are currently working on?
Working on a few collaborations and projects that I can’t really talk about much right now, but I promise they’re exciting!!
Given that there weren’t many personal style blogs when you first started out, what was the inspiration/idea behind starting “Karla’s Closet”?
Well I had a terrible knee injury so I wasn’t able to do much but watch TV and browse the internet. I started reading street style blogs like The Sartorialist and decided why not start a blog too? That’s how it all got started.
How did your readers react to you collaborating with Coach, such an established brand?
I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous to share my Coach collaboration with my readers but they were really supportive and I’m so happy they loved my design!

Who are your favorite designers?
Yves Saint Laurent, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Peter Copping and of course Miuccia Prada.

What’s a typical day like in the life of Karla and how do you manage to balance blogging with schoolwork?
Well I recently graduated from FIDM, so now I have a lot more time to blog. I also run a vintage shop online, so most days I’m photographing and sizing pieces for the shop.

Sum up your personal style in 5 words or less…
Ever-evolving, eclectic, classic, feminine and fun!
Given that you are based in Southern California, where are your top places to shop for vintage goods?
I love the Goodwill’s and Salvation Army’s, Hubba Hubba is great for 50′s and 60′s pieces, American Vintage for sequins and vintage Levi’s, The Fairfax Flea Market and American Rag which also [has] an entire denim bar.

Do you have any advice for industry hopefuls?
I think it’s very important to have thick skin and to be determined and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way!

That’s a wrap…a special thanks to Karla for taking the time to talk to us. For more, visit Karla’s Closet.
