Go All-American With Alex Maine’s Menswear

Jul 29, 2011 By Amy

He has a patriotic logo and is the grandson of a Pearl Harbor survivor, so it’s no wonder Alex Maine Founder & President Bron Heussenstamm is beaming with pride for his country and his company. The

young talent has made a name for himself and his clothing line Alex Maine. We recently talked to the surfer turned entrepreneur to learn more about his brand.

What was the “ah-hah” moment for you when deciding to create a USA made clothing brand?

For me this wasn’t about my ah-hah moment, this was about me creating an ah-hah moment for everyone else. I wanted to show ah-hah, you can make amazing clothes in American and by doing this, ah-hah, you can bring jobs back to this country.

Your logo really stands out, what sparked its creation?

Thank you! The logo was conceived to capture the essence of America in Alex Maine. The Alex Maine logo consists of two parts: the flag and the name. The flag is facing west, backwards from normal, to reflect how the American troops wear it on their sleeve in battle. The word Alex Maine is written in Georgia font. This font was selected because it was developed for the New York Times as an American answer to Times and Times New Roman, which are used by England’s The Times.

By making your store a male friendly environment, how would you describe the Alex Maine customer?

We want everyone to be excited by Alex Maine. We’re not looking at one particular person and singling them out. We want people that love America and want some really comfortable pants. We’ve had the age range from 18-70, male and female, come into the store and we’re just as excited to see them all. And, my friends are really important. They speak up real fast about the products. Its been great to watch them enjoy it.

Lastly, where can we find you…

When looking to hit the beach?

Manhattan Beach! I’ll be surfing El Porto, playing volleyball at 31st street, or reliving the days with the USC alumni. Love it there.

When in need of drink?

I have to support my promoting friends’ nights. Helps that they are really good…  And by really good, I mean great. With one of them or Voyeur is always good. And I have to have my partner in crime Jillian Davis.

On the very northern tip of Oregon, there is a little beach off a dirt road from the highway called Sunset Beach.  You can drive your car, make a bonfire, go fishing, surf, and camp on the sand and probably not see anyone for the whole day.  It is an amazing place.  The coast range of mountains run up against the coast there so you are truly at the edge of the continent, and it feels like it.

My favorite sandy summer spot has to be Dunn River Falls in Jamaica. It was an experience of a life time. The food, the people and the cool island breeze. Just picture yourself with the wind in your hair hair an your favorite drink. It was awesome.

Oh man, how can I possibly choose! My favorite sandy summer getaway has to be off the small town of Cap d’Ail, just west of Monaco. About a ten minute walk from the Cap d’Ail train station is the amazing La Mala beach. I like to bring a bottle of Chateau Haut-Brion, some cheese, and a beautiful Parisian female and swim in some of the most beautiful waters in the world (clothing optional of course)!

My fave sandy place is on the west coast of Florida. Sanibel island retains its quaint status by limiting high rise building and dedicating a substantial amount of land for bird migration. It’s beaches are considered some of the finest for shelling in the world and fish and wild life abound. Surely this is an environmental miracle considering the growth of Florida.

I would love to be able to visit sunny Jamaica beaches :)
