Time To Go Clutch Crazy With Emm Kuo
A purse is kind of like a girl’s lifeline. It carries all of our necessities and we’d literally be lost without it. Therefore, it’s no surprise we tend to invest in quality handbags to carry our valuables and add a touch of chicness to everyday attire. Designer Emmaline Kuo Ranzman knows this pretty well, as her high end handbag line, Emm Kuo is quickly becoming a new must-have. We of course had to get the know the designer and her luxe collection a little better.
What were your creative inspirations behind your current 2011 collection?
S/S 2011 is our first collection and it was inspired by the Art Deco period and strong architectural lines. We used a lot of textural contrasts and mixed materials that you wouldn’t normally think to pair together. Also each style is influenced by a place I’ve traveled to, and I’ve actually named each bag after a favorite street.
Having worked in various facets of fashion, at what point in your life did you find yourself better suited for the design side of the industry?
I’ve always wanted to design, but I knew it was really important to have a strong business background as well. Working in fashion marketing gave me a solid foundation and taught me how to sell and promote a brand. It wasn’t until I was styling and working with designers that I realized that it was time for me to make the switch over. So I enrolled at Parsons School of Design and it went from there.
Also, what prompted you to take the leap to launch your own handbag company?
I had worked in fashion marketing as well as in design, so I had a lot of the knowledge and resources needed to launch a brand. But, mainly I couldn’t find high-end exotic bags that were suitable for woman who wanted something edgy and versatile at the same time. And that is the basis behind Emm Kuo. The accessories are multifunction able and versatile and are for various lifestyles.
Which brands or designer collections do you personally pair your bags with?
A typical everyday look for me would be the Westbourne Grove satchel, with leather jacket and vintage jewelry and a colorful scarf. As far as brands go, I love Givenchy, Proenza Schouler and Topshop. I never wear a brand head to toe, and am a huge advocate of a high-low mix.
Lastly, what advice do you have for aspiring fashion industry hopefuls?
Fashion is a tough industry, so be persistent! But more importantly, it’s important to love what you do!
