Nicholas K’s Collection Reflected An Ocean of Creativity
Gird your loins!.…There’s anticipation, well-heeled excitement, and umbrellas in the air! Fashion week is officially upon us! Today marks the first day of shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center (and Fashion’s Night Out). With a shiny brand new facade the tents were open and packed with savvy show goers and editors.
The first spring/summer show of the season was from Nicholas K, a brand who I honestly wasn’t familiar with, but since their show was being produced by People’s Revolution I went. If you remember watching “The Hills” or “Kell on Earth”, then you recall seeing People’s Rev founder Kelly Cutrone’s on camera bursts of brutal honesty. I was hoping to catch her solve a case of front row seat snatching, but considering I managed to snag one of the coveted seats, I was also thankful nothing was directed at me. Luckily for us all, no drama occurred before my newfound love affair with Nicholas K.
The masterminds of the brand are designers Nicholas and Christopher Kunz, who were inspired by natural beauty and landscapes for their new collection. The men’s and women’s clothing carried a strong sense of natural movement coupled with earth toned colors. Well, what most of us refer to as grey, green, and khaki they creatively call barnacle, birch, salt, kelp, dolphin, shell, shark, and algae – I love it! It’s this kind of out of the box err, rather into the ocean thinking that makes me adore their collection which transformed everyday basics into a chic attire suitable for work or play.
My my most coveted pieces from the S/S 12 looks were the lightweight jackets which were folded over below the neckline. Overall their collection consisted of versatility, functionality and style- a fashionable combination if you ask me. An endearing moment was during the finale when the design duo made their way onstage with their friendly dog.
