Sarah Jessica Parker’s red carpet Sex and the City 2 London premiere outfit was a complete showstopper. We’re not sure where to start, her amazing Alexander McQueen gown? Or the artistic piece on her head? It’s fitting for Parker to wear McQueen since she’s presenting a CFDA tribute award in his honor. Her black lace and sparkle headband mash-up was created by Philip Treacy. Feel like you’re having deja vu? That’s because you are, for the last Sex and the City UK debut Parker wore vivid green creations from both designers — what a wonderful way to pay homage to London.

It’s no coincidence that Sarah Jessica Parker is the face of Vogue‘s May issue with the title, Great American Women, penned beneath her. This perfectly coincides with The Met Costume Institute Exhibition and Gala’s theme of American Women: Fashioning a National Identity. Parker is a strong representation of today’s current feminine fashions. While not all of us are well-heeled with Choo’s or Manolo’s, Parker does present a certain all-American grace that fashion has fallen in love with.

When talking about the lovely SJP, Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton said, “She is such a style icon, but apart from that, she is very adaptable in terms of the clothes she wears. She is somebody who costumes herself into roles. When you think of Sarah Jessica Parker, you almost think of a flapper, because she has this remarkable joie de vivre about her.”

Parker is willing to experiment with fashion, plus she has a look that allows her to chameleon other eras while remaining a modern role model.

If Parker doesn’t embody your representation of an American woman’s style today, we think The Met Exhibit and Gala will bring forth some great examples, whilst paying homage to the evolution of fashion and women in America. As reported by, WWD, the new showcase will house purpose-built circular galleries that set the stage for different American archetypes since 1890: The “Gibson Girl,” the “Bohemian,” the “Suffragist” and “Patriot,” “Flappers,” the “Screen Siren,” and, finally, a look at the faces of American women from the 1890s through now.

“The American style has absolutely cultivated itself,” said Donna Karan by way of WWD, who herself, with her iconic seven easy pieces, has come to define one facet of it. “You see this effortlessness of individuality and comfort, which I think comes from the legacy of the blue jeans. When you think of America, you think of T-shirts and blue jeans.”

However, Barneys Creative Director, Simon Doonan, isn’t all that thrilled with American style at the moment. Doonan told WWD, “I don’t know how well it serves women, when you think about the world of breast implants, and fake hair and fake tans and fake everything that are a dominant feature of our culture right now. Maybe now is a great time to reflect on the more nuanced archetypes in history.”

Judge the progression of American style for yourself, this new display will be open for viewing from May 5 to August 15 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the famous Gala Benefit lands on May 3rd.

Movie star, fashion icon, actress, and mother are just a few ways to describe the multi-talented Sarah Jessica Parker. Now you can add President and Chief Creative Officer to that list. Parker has accepted these roles and will start working with fashion label, Halston. With new career titles and a blockbuster film (Sex and The City 2) on the way, Parker recently sat down with Vogue to talk about her successes. Some highlights from the comprehensive article are below and you can read the full piece penned by Vicki Woods online.

On the importance of keeping perspective: “We painted our patio furniture ourselves…. I make my children’s food myself. We put together their high chairs ourselves; we do a lot ourselves! We do our own grocery shopping, we go to the market ourselves, you know? I do my laundry.”

The upcoming Sex and the City sequel: “We four women, despite I guess what a lot of people hope, have never been better. This movie—and maybe it’s because we actually lived together—it was the best! We were together all day long, at night, in the restaurants, in our hotels. It was wonderful.”

Her introduction to New York and Halston: “I came to New York originally in 1976, and then I got this part in Annie around the corner from Studio 54. I was a little girl, and for some reason they always invited the cast of Annie to Studio 54, so there I was at thirteen and fourteen, and the doorman would usher us in, literally underneath his arms. And it was 1977 in New York City, and you couldn’t be alive and not know the name Halston.”

Her new position with Halston: “There was every reason to say no, and there were very compelling reasons to say yes…. It’s an exciting time at that company. It has had some false starts that are well documented and it is relaunching itself. It has a wonderful legacy, and I couldn’t say no.”

Also, be sure to browse the glamorous editorial by Mario Testino which accompanies this interview.
