As you may have noticed we’re all abuzz here with the highly anticipated launch of our incredible Vintage section. We’ll continue to share noteworthy ad campaigns, covers, and editorials from yesteryear as their credits and new images make it in the database. Until then, we wanted to share some of the standout covers which caught our eyes when our vintage collection of publications made its way online.

Hop on Sam Riley‘s scooter because we’re going for a ride through time…back to when mod looks ruled on both coasts. Fashion editor Grace Coddington may have dug into her memory bank for this concept since she developed the stunning “My Generation” shoot for Vogue you see here. Photographers Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott captured the insanely gorgeous Natalia Vodianova with dark haired actor Riley.

The editorial trails the duo as they make a speedy getaway up the coast for some canoodling and quality time. Unlike other beach shoots, I love how this editorial keeps both models clothed, while showing off fall coat trends. It is October after all and the beach stays beautiful year round (just gets a tad chilly). Keeping with autumn attire, how gorgeous is the green snakeskin coat Vodianova wears? If slithering styles aren’t your thing then you’ll probably appreciate this red Versace wool military jacket, which is perfect for windy scooter rides.

Best Covers

If there’s two things we know it’s that fashion and Freja go hand in hand, so kudos to Vogue British for their cover.

Christina Ricci has been making a major comeback in the style scene and this print heavy wide-eyed Nylon cover suits her (and the mag) well.

Tongue out and ice cream in her eye, Lindsey Wixson and i-D magazine aren’t taking fall fashion so seriously, they’re having fun, which we’re big fans of!

Now we’re not huge fans of Twilight at MyFDB, but there’s no denying how captivating Kristen Stewart appears in this glamorously seductive cover for W.

Beyonce gracing the cover of Bazaar? Yes, and she works wonders in front of photog Alexi Lubomirski.

Blushing model bride Kate Moss on the cover of US Vogue…enough said. The magazine practically sells itself.

Worst Covers

Jessica Alba is a doll in an LBD, but Lucky‘s pink text is completely overshadowing the actress.

The same issue is found on GQ British‘s September cover. More Bar Refaeli, less words.

Numero‘s black and white cover looks great, it’s just at tad overcrowded with five models being featured.

Muse‘s cover shot, which is normally more artistic and fashion forward, feels a bit cheesy by placing the words “Full On!” above Doutzen Kroes‘ cleavage.

We’re on the fence about GQ Italia‘s cover. We like seeing Rooney Mara promote her character in “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, but we’d also like to see the actress’ natural beauty.

Town & Country? Although, we are Hemingway fans, this magazine is still around and we’re not sure why.

Forget the articles in Vogue for a moment, because the character of personalities that work for the various editions of the publication around the globe are walking stories themselves. From Anna Dello Russo to Andre Leon Talley, being over the top is more than all right with them. Editor at large, Hamish Bowles and his not-so-secret talent of singing landed him a very peculiar assignment- audition for the X Factor. If you’re not familiar with the TV show, it’s kind of like the adult version of American Idol, where anything goes. The show is currently receiving negative press after a contestant dropped his pants while singing on stage. While the manbits were bleeped out, that’s considered a huge “no no” by the FCC, or in fashion terms, a faux pas!  It seems peculiar for the luxury magazine to align itself with the program, but the order came directly from Anna Wintour herself. Personally, I have a feeling this was some sort of paid promotional stunt by the show, especially since the judges were aware there was a Vogue editor amongst the contestants, but regardless it’s still entertaining.

In his detailed account of the event and his reaction when he first laid eyes on Wintour’s email Bowles writes,”There, buried like a time bomb in a bouquet, was this chilling sentence: ‘I have signed you up to compete in The X Factor. You can sing,’ says Anna, who has heard me warble some comedic Noël Coward songs at the Rug Company during Fashion’s Night Out. ‘This will be easy for you.’ Her enthusiasm buoys me along, until a moment over dinner at the Metropolitan Opera – after Jonas Kaufmann’s celestial voice during Act I of Die Walküre has brought tears to my eyes – when she insouciantly announces that she is, in fact, completely tone deaf.”

So, Anna Wintour is tone deaf and can use email? The things we’re learning today! Continuing with the stage name Leo Mercuré, Bowles ventured to the audition wearing Louboutins, a Philip Treacy fedora, and an unbelievable gold Thierry Mugler suit. One thing’s for sure, he was certainly the best dressed contestant! This all happened back in April when the editor made his way to Newark (a place the fashion crowd wouldn’t typically go) for the open casting call with about another 20,000 hopefuls.

Bowles re-accounts the day, “I clasp my ill-gained golden ticket (number 39910) like a badge of shame and grow determined to justify its possession. It’s been decided that I will leapfrog these early elimination rounds and perform for the judges on June 8 under an assumed name; they will know there is a Vogue editor in the lineup, but I won’t be announced as such. I have only two months to mold a quavering voice that is clearly in need of all the help it can get.”

Of course his Vogue budget afforded him a top of the charts voice coach to help perfect Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. However, mastering his nerves was a whole other ordeal when it came time to return to this mysterious land of Newark. He penned the “terror is so real it practically has a heartbeat.”

Bowles continues, “…an urgent call comes from the producer asking for my entire set list—of five songs. Lest the judges have any warning signs that I am Mr.Vogue, I must submit the standard number of audition songs required of every contestant. “They probably won’t ask you to sing any more than the two you’ve prepared,” adds the producer, unreassuringly. I think I may projectile vomit. I add “You Couldn’t Be Cuter,” “Somewhere Only We Know,” and “Someone Like You,” try to remember the lyrics, and pray to the Baby Jesus that I don’t get called on to perform them.”

And then it wasn’t too long until it was time for Bowles to hit the stage…

“For the first “Oops,” I give them a saucy little hip swing (as though I’d been pinched on the bum), which seems to amuse the audience no end; several “Oops”es later, some of them are up and gyrating themselves, and I can even see a giggly Simon and Paula mouthing the word and bumping their hips together.”

As for response from the judges?

“Thank you, Leo,” says Simon [Cowell]. “We’re just going to go to a straight yes or a no, I think. L.A.?”

“I love your swagger, Leo,” says L.A [Reid]. “You’re fly, man. The whole thing, it’s fly. I’m going to have to say no today, but I did enjoy you.”

“That was the first I ever heard a ‘proper’ version of Britney Spears,” says Nicole [Scherzinger], laughing. “And I really liked it. You’re a lot of fun, Leo, you are. But I don’t know if it’s what I’m looking for today, so I’m going to have to say no. Thank you.”

“You’re an exquisite odd bird, really,” says Paula [Abdul], genuinely straining to break it to me gently. “I would love to hang out with you. I adore you, and it was fun, but . . . not for the $5 million prize.”

“Leo, nice to meet you, but it’s a no,” says Simon. “Thank you.”

Ouch! He didn’t make it to the next round, but afterwards Bowles’ big secret of really being Mr. Vogue was revealed to Simon who said, “You fooled us, Hamish, so full marks to you.”

We didn’t mean get Rihanna’s “Umbrella” stuck in your head, but after hearing about beautiful Malgosia Bela‘s work you might want to change the lyrics to include her name. This Polish model (and actress) hit the runway in 1998 and has been landing campaigns and editorial shoots ever since, hence why she’s this week’s Model Monday feature.

This past spring/summer you couldn’t flip through a magazine without seeing Bela in Chloe, Stella McCartney, and Nina Ricci ad campaigns. Kudos to her for being such an accomplished model and a mom (yes, she has a 5-year-old) in her thirties. Bela continues to pursue acting and actually lives in Los Angeles…hmm, maybe we’ll run into her one day?

The model also has a magic touch when it comes to editorial shoots, as she’s frequently shot for Vogues around the globe– like this recent Vogue Espana cover.

Although, one of her most stand out shoots was by Tim Burton for Harper’s Bazaar back in October 2009.

I’m sure you’ve all seen the movie The September Issue, which skyrocketed Anna Wintour to even greater heights and put the making of a magazine’s biggest annual issue on camera. So we wanted to show off some of the Sept covers which have made their way into the office. There’s the highly anticipated shot of newlywed Kate Moss in Vogue, Beyonce covering InStyle, and Gwyenth Paltrow gracing Elle‘s cover. Not to mention the haute shots in the gallery below. This just in, the boss of the fashion world also known as Anna Wintour is heading to Japan for their Fashion’s Night Out. Japan has been getting a lot of help after the devastation that occurred last year and Anna isn’t the only one going… According to WWD, All of the Vogue editions’ top editors such as Franca Sozzani, Emmanuelle Alt and Alexandra Shulman are headed to Japan in early November along with Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Conde Nast International in support of the country’s fashion industry.

Worried that this will affect New York’s FNO? Fear not, that event is taking place on September 8th while this one will take place November 4th with a gala dinner for fashion’s biggest influencers. The shopping event will take place the  following day…so it’s more like “Fashion’s Day Out” with the event going from 2pm-10pm.

So will you be there?

According to the Telegraph, “while Anna’s at the helm of US Vogue, it will remain an Alaïa-free zone. All US Vogue staff were banned from attending his couture presentation yesterday, both by Wintour and by Alaïa, who also huffed that the publication never supports him anyway, “She hasn’t photographed my work in years even if I am a best seller in the U.S. and I have 140 square meters at Barneys. American women love me; I don’t need her support at all.”

Perhaps Wintour, who attended the premiere with her niece, is secretly a huge Harry Potter fan? (we bet she’s already on Pottermore.) Besides who needs Vogue when you have noteworthy guests such as Kanye West, Donatella Versace, and Sofia Coppola (whose wedding dress could be Alaïa designed) at your show?

On the catwalk models Karlie Kloss, Sigrid Agren, Karmen Pedaru, Hailey Clauson, Sasha Pivovarova, and Arizona Muse (to name a few) all strutted the Tunisian designer’s latest looks. The collection commenced with meticulously tailored variations of the coat-dress and transitioned to noir gowns with sheer and ruffled accents. The coat-dresses need to grow on us, but the sharpness of the formal dresses and their subtle, yet impactful detailing are reasons Alaïa has remained a high fashion staple for so long…sorry Anna.

The pretty and androgynous looking model was born in 1991 and according to NY Mag made her runway debut in February 2009 for Blugirl in Milan. Since then, she has starred in several editorials in addition to being the face of Alexander Wang this year.

Known for her sunken eyes, intense cheekbones, lucious pout and a recent feature in Vogue, it’s no secret that Amyeline looks amazing…with or without clothes.
