Saying we’re excited for the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion event is an understatement since our co-founder Zoe Saldana will be hosting the evening. With her keen fashion eye she’ll be showing support for emerging industry talent. Through the years Gen Art has helped launched the careers of some of fashion’s biggest names including Geren Ford and Philip Lim. Their runway has become a platform for up and coming designers to showcase their work and this season guests will be introduced to an array of womenswear and accessory collections (including our pal TOMTOM) along with swimwear and menswear lines.

The fashion collective is bigger than ever as the premiere Los Angeles Fashion Week event coming this October 22nd.  Gen Art carefully selected the 11 designers listed below to participate and we can’t wait to see their collections. First up we have a stunning Vogue Paris cover from Inez & Vinoodh featuring Lara Stone‘s intense gaze as an airplane zooms behind her.

Then LOVE showed Stone it’s okay to cry with two tears running down her face.

Elle UK‘s cover had us doing a double-take with Lily Allen, who could pass for Crystal Renn’s doppleganger.

Zoe Saldana totally FLAUNTed it for the mag’s cover in a nude body suit.

Angela Lindvall brought some family values to Numero Toyko in a short green frock.

Meanwhile, Samantha Gradoville looked seriously seductive on the cover of Numero.

Worst Covers

Kim Kardashian covers Cosmopolitan in a dull shot that’s hardly flattering or sexy.

GQ British tapped Charlie Sheen for their cover, but it was all a tease as they failed to provide a solid corresponding editorial.

i-D magazine turned sweet Behati Prinsloo into a scary heavy metal machine.

We’re not sure what the story is behind W‘s cover, but Tilda Swinton isn’t making us want to flip through the mag.

We really do like gorgeous Freida Pinto’s Interview cover, we’re just not impressed because it’s practically identical to the mag’s cover with Tom Ford.

Instead of taking her photo Dazed & Confused opted for an illustrated shot of Bjork, who serves as the publication’s guest editor.

MyFDB: Given Glamour Reel Moments are derived from reader submissions, what inspired you about this particular life story to create the “KAyLien” character and script?
ZS: What inspired me was my niece, who is 8 years old and this past school year she was getting bullied in school. Then there was a letter that one of the readers submitted and we chose it because it related to a topic that’s very close to my family and my heart, and that’s autism. My ballet teacher, who’s like my second mom, [has a] son with autism and we’ve gotten to witness what it’s like to care for a child with that condition, but also see the child living in a world that’s completely different…So that inspired all of that.

MyFDB: Were there any pivotal moments or scenes on set where you were emotionally moved? And given the emotion with the story line, what are you hoping viewers will take way from this short?
ZS: There were moments. My friend Frankie Flowers, who is my best friend and my colleague, he’s the one that wrote the short. Frankie and I wanted to truly have the characters of the parents involved in this child’s life. So when we got the actors, Bradley Cooper, Malin Ackerman along with Kelli Barksdale (the actress that played KAyLien), they were in the kitchen as a family and even though they were tending to a child that’s different, she’s not affectionate to them and she’s quiet, they still loved their child and they’re still just as excited for her first day of school as they would be with any other child. That to me was very emotional. That’s what I feel when I see parents that have children with autism or any other disability, they still love their child and they enjoy their child so much.

MyFDB: How did you prepare to step behind the camera? Did you find yourself referencing the techniques of other directors you’ve worked with in the past?
ZS: Oh Absolutely! I was referencing a bunch of things I’ve worked with and other directors on their projects, like motion capture, prosthetics, stunts, and all these things that I wanted to incorporate. And even though I love films that are very dramatic and have sort of an emotional tone, I like it when it involves action and fiction. And that’s what I did; I stayed true to what I love about film making. It was a lot of work. It was creating the alien look, the color of the alien skin, would  she have teeth or not  because we planned on adding some special effects to the piece, and rehearsing a stunt. Helping the actor while she climbed the tree. It was three hectic days, but it was so awesome.

MyFDB: The Glamour project is known for launching directorial debuts (17 to date) and since this your first, do you plan on pursuing other opportunities behind the camera?
ZS: Actually this was my second, I co-directed three episodes of an internet series called “The Ropes” with my sister Cisely. So I got my feet wet for the very first time earlier this year and then when the Glamour opportunity came along I jumped on it and she jumped on as the producer, which I was really elated about.

MyFDB: Oh, that’s cool. It’s nice there’s a family dynamic.
ZS: Well yeah, I feel as a half when I create. Obviously I have a great support system of friends and family, but when it comes to the end of the day collaboration and synchronicity, I have it with my sister Cisely. And that’s what we want to be, we want to be the first sister team of directors. There aren’t any, you have [brothers like] the Cohens, but you don’t have any sisters that direct. We are looking to get that done.

MyFDB: Given male directors are more prevalent in the film industry, what message do you think Glamour Reel Moments is sending to those females aspiring to be apart of it?
ZS: It’s such a strong and inspiring message of shedding light on topics that you need to be addressed and also giving women the opportunity to express their artistic voice. In reality, the shorts are inspired by readers that submit their own personal experiences. It’s also giving the readers of Glamour magazine the opportunity to basically free themselves by sharing with the world their experiences, and for us to showcase that in a film is really rewarding.

MyFDB: Lastly, since we are a fashion company, so we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t ask you what your attire was like on set?
ZS: It was very androgynous (pictured left). There were a lot of button-down shirts, boots and jeans. I wanted to be really comfortable. We were shooting in very hot weather, so it was about covering up. My sister and I were covering up with long sleeves, linen and cotton, hats, sunblock, but we had our bright red lipstick on.

MyFDB: Nice, that’s the perfect touch!
ZS: That’s one thing I would like to incorporate more of and I would like to see more female directors, producers, and filmmakers not hide their femininity, not hide their beauty just because they are working in a world that’s primarily known to be a man’s world. Don’t feel like you have to look like a man and purposely make yourself unattractive just so you can be respected and acknowledged.  I say, “Show your tits! Showcase your ass, have your swagger and look drop-dead gorgeous if that’s what you want!” And still be actively commanding and have power. So yes, my jeans were tight and my lipstick was red! So was Cisely’s and we had such a blast!

Amazing and we couldn’t agree more; you can still be who you are confidently while also having power and commanding a room. Zoe’s “KAyLien” short for Glamour Reel Moments is set to premiere this October and will be available for free online (MyFDB will keep you updated on the release). Until then congratulations to Zoe on a job well done!

Actress Zoe Saldana and one of the MyFDB founders (who recently spoke to Forbes) rocks the August cover of Flaunt magazine, looking in true Saldana form equally sexy and beautiful in a nude number with red nails and accessories that pop! Shot by Yu Tsai, Zoe rocked items by Chanel, Balmain, and Lanvin. The shoot comes in perfect timing with the the release of her next film “Colombiana” out August 26th. Saldana plays Cataleya Restrepo, who as a young child witnessed the murder of her parents in Bogotá. It’s at that point she decides she wants to become an assassin. Cat is taken in by her uncle, Emilio Restrepo who she works for as a professional killer seeking (beautiful) revenge.

Getting more buzz than the films themselves are the red carpet fashions at the 2011 Festival de Cannes in France. The annual film fest draws hoards of movie stars, who aren’t just there to attend movie premieres, but are also in town for the social scene. With daily and nightly activities, the event brings together haute fashions and Hollywood glamour…it truly is a who’s who of fashion and film on the red carpets. Some of the most talked about pieces so far include Salma Hayek‘s blooming Gucci frock, Angelina Jolie‘s black Versace gown, Zoe Saldana’s red and white Armani Prive dress, and Rachel McAdams‘ Monique Lhuillier camel pants. For better or worse the fashions are very eye-catching!

Besides “egg”cellent McQueen pieces, last night’s Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art brought out troves of fashion’s elite. It was one of those events where literally everyone who was anyone was there (including MyFDB CEO, Keith Britton). The red carpet steps leading up to the Met were swarming with photogs scrambling to get that perfect shot of these elaborate gowns.

This is one of the few events where you’ll find a mixed crowd of fashion editors, celebrities, designers, and models. The diversity of the attendees makes the evening that much more spectacular. Not to mention the speculation and intrigue over who wore what. I doubt anyone could’ve predicted Kanye West walking the red carpet in a Tory Burch tux with the designer. The musical Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine) made her arrival with YSL designer Stefano Pilati and later preformed for guests. Meanwhile, Janelle Monae‘s Chanel get up, complete with top hat, was too cute. Many beauties actually found themselves matching the carpet as red turned out to be the  popular shade of the evening. Doutzen Kroes (Giambattista Valli), Lara Stone (Calvin Klein Collection), Gisele Bundchen (Alexander McQueen), J. Lo (Gucci), and Bee Shaffer (Balenciaga) all shined in a version of the hue. Opting for brighter gowns Anna Wintour (in colorblocked Chanel Couture),  Zoe Saldana (yellow Calvin Klein Collection), Rosie Huntington-Whitley (pink Burberry) all boldly stood out from the crowd.

There really were so many incredible gowns that it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite, therefore we pulled shots of the ones that got us talking the most for you to peruse.

What projects do you have in the works and where can we expect to see your hair styles next?
The Oscars are right around the corner. I will be doing Mila Kunis as a presenter. I also have the cover of Lucky coming out in March, along with a Vogue Italia shoot with Zoe Saldana.

Have you always wanted to be a hair stylist? How did you get your start in the business?
I was always a very creative kid, styling and coloring my friends hair in junior high school. When I was 16 I asked my mom if I could get my GED and go to beauty school. So I did. When I graduated beauty school a year later, a family friend of ours, who at the time was a big publicist, asked me if I could style one of her clients Sarah Michelle Gellar for a big premiere. Of course I did it. That was the beginning of it all.

What’s been one of your favorite shoots to work on with Zoe Saldana?
That is a hard question! The [Giant magazine] shoot we did with Nino Munoz was amazing or our [Essence] shoot with photographer Yu Sai was fun and the pictures were beautiful.

Aside from Zoe, what other celebrities and models have you worked with?
Model, Angela Lindvall, Mila Kunis, Emma Stone, Jessica Biel, Zooey Deschanel and Diane Kruger.

What are your tricks of the trade for maintaining glamorous and beautiful locks?
Be gentle with your hair. I try to not use too many products that can dry out the hair, or give it a harsh texture. Deep conditioning your hair once a week is key.

Lastly, what advice do you have for aspiring fashion industry hopefuls?
Have patience and stick to it. Push yourself to find inspiration and stay motivated.

It’s a bittersweet day here in New York as we bid adieu to fashion week until September. With the sun shinning and the weather unusually warm, I headed to the final show on MyFDB’s agenda: Calvin Klein‘s women’s wear collection designed by creative director, Francisco Costa. With the CK men’s show being a huge hit, I was excited to find out what was in store for their female customers this fall.

Upon arrival, paparazzi was already swarming in anticipation of celebrity arrivals: Zoe Saldana, Kate Bosworth, and Kerry Washington. Photographers had a real field day inside because the trio was seated together front row. While waiting to get in the venue, I spotted a sleuth of fashion’s heavy hitters making their way to builing including: Grace Coddington, Anna Dello Russo, Joe Zee, Terry Richardson, Andre Leon Talley, and Georgia May Jagger (who were seated together).

Once the show commenced the audience was treated to grey dresses, which had a bit of a youthful appeal with detailing around the collar. The collection progressed to showcase stone technical silk satin pieces that carried a shine to them. Keeping in true Calvin Klein fashion, each piece was structured perfectly for their modern consumer. I also swooned over alpaca fur, metallic pieces in gold, and multiple black silk items. I felt like there was a bit of mystery with Francisco Costa’s designs, especially with the large textured coats which are perfect for hiding a seductive metallic dress underneath. Mystery and surprise is how I’d sum up this collection- conservative and stylish garments mixed with more form-fitting and attention getting pieces.

Models spotted working the Calvin Klein included: Arizona Muse, Lara Stone, Nimue Smit, Mirte Maas, Kasia Wrobel, Juju Ivanyuk, and Merethe Hopland to name a few.

How did you get your start as a makeup artist? Was this always your dream career path?
I started make up school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I didn’t think I could make a career out of it, but since I was really young I got involved in photography. I had an aunt that was an actress, so I used to go with her to the rehearsals. I always liked anything that had to do with the arts, beauty, transformations and lighting. Once I moved to the states I was really focused on what I wanted to do, which was having and making a career out of it [beauty]…And with time and lots of practice I made it happen.

What’s been one of your favorite shoots to work on with Zoe Saldana?
I’ve had many favorites shoots with Zoe, one of them being Ocean Drive, because we where at a beautiful location in Puerto Rico, but I have to say that Wonderland UK was [also] an amazing spread, I was really happy with the photo shoot and how the pictures turned [out]. Also working on movies with Zoe has given me the opportunity to really get to know her better and have many great times and continue learning about beauty, fashion, and film with her.

What are three makeup staples every girl should have in her purse?
Every girl should have mascara, cheeks and lips….even if it is lip balm!

What are a few of your favorite cosmetic and skin care brands?
I love Chanel, Nars, M.A.C., Laura Mercier and for skin care [I use] La Mer, Epicuren and Cetaphil.

After a long night, what’s the best way to give yourself that “fresh faced” look?
After a long night, always clean your face before going to bed, moisturize a lot, drink water and get at least 8 hours sleep!

Name one makeup trend you wish would disappear and why?
I don’t really have a make up trend that I wish would disappear, because I think the beauty of certain trends at that moment are fun somehow.

Lastly, what advice do you have for aspiring fashion industry hopefuls?
My advice is never to give up on what your passion is! Learn something new everyday, leave egos on the side and give your love and heart to whatever you want to do.

American beauty, Kate Bosworth continues to have a stellar acting career and recently added jewelry designer to her never ending resume.
