Artist Answers: Meet Patterson J.Kincaid Designer, Chelsey Santry
MyFDB is excited to introduce a new column to our blog, “Artist Answers.” This is where we’ll dive into the background of our favorite fashion industry professionals and learn more about their day-to-day responsibilities. First up is Creative Director/Designer, Chelsey Santry of the brand, Patterson J. Kincaid.
Since much of the Patterson J. Kincaid line seems very flowy and California-chic, how has growing up on the west coast influenced your design process?
I think its definitely influenced the line….the pieces aren’t structured and are very easy to wear and layer with. I think that’s the way I’ve always dressed, so the styling of the line just came naturally. Since the line is easily layer-able there are a lot of styles that can be worn whether warm or cold outside.
I’m formally a merchandiser, not a designer…so I think that when you start to create a line its important that you establish core bodies and fabrications and then continuously evolve them. We are really lucky to have found some amazing home run bodies that we run delivery after delivery refreshing details, prints and fabrications to keep our girl wanting more. I think as a merchant, and a consumer, its always important to build off of those established core styles and offer new styles that could potentially become new core bodies and/or ideas above and beyond what our accounts and customers already come to us for season after season. I think this keeps the brand new and fresh looking but also allows the brand to continue to grow aggressively.
Can you tell us where the name Patterson J. Kincaid originated?
Hahaha….The never ending question!! When we decided to start the line it was the only thing we couldn’t nail down….i loved Patterson (because my mom’s name is Penelope and she has this insane signature style (hence the crazy P) and Jane loved Kincaid after the Partridge family……and we knew we wanted a name, so I guess we just put the two together finally and it stuck!
Please name two pieces from the current line that you’re most proud of.
Tough question….for Spring I think I’m most proud of this amazing long printed kimono dress we did with a big silk sash tie…..and im also in love with our comfy/slouchy twill bottoms…literally can’t take them off!!
What can we expect next from the Patterson J. Kincaid brand?
For Spring we have the twill bottoms….and we are also doing some AMAZING dresses….from solid gauze to crochet to printed chiffons…..literally every shape and length you could imagine!….the response has been amazing.
We’d love to know some of your favorite travel destinations where you find design inspiration from?
Tough question….i really find inspiration from everywhere I go and every experience I have….this summer a lot of inspiration came out of Palm Springs and from music festivals that my friends and I frequented.
Lastly, what advice do you have for aspiring fashion industry hopefuls?
Keep your head down and work hard. Take any opportunity you can to get your foot in the door and work really hard to learn about every area in this industry.
That’s great advice and huge thank you to Chelsey Santry for sharing her experience and insights. For more on Patterson J. Kincaid visit their official site.
