Vogue Italia’s Haute Mess

Mar 13, 2012 By Editor

Haute couture is all about the over the top, the ultra fantastical and the extraordinarily imaginative. However, there is a ?ne line between haute couture and a fashion faux pas. Critics of fashion often joke about this, poking fun at the seemingly nonsensical nature that the upper echelons of the garment industry use to determine what makes the cut of couture. But it is true, many fashion enthusiasts continue to be confused concerning what determines the defining line between high end, chic couture ensembles and just some uber expensive, tacky outfits. Luckily, Vogue Italia?s March 2012 editorial gives readers a visual lesson on what constitutes a haute mess.

The story entitled “Haute Mess” is shot by Steven Meisel and is set at a few interesting locations like a fast food restaurant, a convenience store, and a public bathroom. The models are done up in out of control looks that include dramatically colorful weaves plastered with candy wrappers, obnoxiously vibrant makeup and ghastly long nails adorned with animal prints. Nothing about the model?s ensembles- or the entire shoot for that matter- makes any sense- except the overall theme of the absurdly trashy. But trashy is taken to a new level for this shoot with an absolutely ridiculous mixture of harajuku and hooker; these out?ts explode with neon colors, glitter, cheetah prints, sneakers and body con.

However, it seems that this Vogue Italia March 2012 shoot is not only commenting on trashy couture but also tacky behavior, like the myspace bathroom mirror shot which shows up multiple times in the story and women exuding unladylike behavior in provocative and revealing stances. Other shots, that seem to be commenting on the current edgy state of pop culture, are strewn throughout the shoot including a disturbing looking model who is pregnant and women aimlessly touting babies around. Probably the strangest photo in the entire spread is of a model who is spread eagle in front of a urinal wearing a fabulous one piece bathing suit with daring cut outs and some fierce looking heels. Overall, even though nothing seems to be making any sense in this entire out-of-control editorial, the only clear point is that this shoot seems like it was probably an incredibly fun story to work on.
